The Hawks and Wizards were tied up in a back and forth game right till the end of the fourth when the Hawks seemed to have pulled away as they were up 4 points with under 20 seconds remaining. However, a Bradley Beal steal and a missed free throw by Al Horford led to a final possession for the Wizards in which they went to none other than cold-blooded veteran Paul Pierce.
You had a feeling when he touched the ball it would go in, but the degree of difficulty on this shot attempt as time expired was just incredible. Pierce double pumped in the air as he fell out of bounds and the fans inside the Verizon Center erupted as the shot went in at the buzzer.
The official first ruled it a made basket and the game was headed to OT. Paul Pierce was celebrating with fans in the front row and the crowd was fired up. But, after further review it turned out the ball was still in Pierce’s hands as the red light came on.
The Hawks held on for a 94-91 win, breaking the hearts of all Wizards players and fans. It was an awkward, but heartbreaking ending for Pierce and the Wizards.
The Hawks meanwhile advance to their first Eastern Conference Finals in franchise history since 1970.
