University of Washington Fires Lorenzo Romar

In a move that won’t sit too well with Seattle-area basketball players and former University of Washington athletes, Lorenzo Romar has been fired after serving as the head coach of mens basketball for 15 seasons. After going 19-15 in 2015-16 and helping send Marquese Chriss and Dejounte Murray to the NBA, the Huskies went 9-22 in 2016-17, despite having the potential 2017 NBA Draft No.1 pick Markelle Fultz running the point.

“After evaluating our men’s basketball program, I have determined that a change in leadership is necessary,” UW’s Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. “Today is particularly difficult because Coach Romar is such a beloved member of our University community. I want to thank Lorenzo and his family for 15 years of dedicated service and sacrifice to our University.”

There is now speculation that the No.1 high school player in the world, Michael Porter Jr who had committed to UW could de-commit and potentially sign with a different school, more specifically with his hometown Missouri Tigers.

Seattle hoops legend Jamal Crawford also took to Twitter to show his support for Romar.
