Raptors President Masai Ujiri Told DeMar DeRozan He Could Be The Kobe Bryant Of Toronto

Raptors president Masai Ujiri is one of the coolest front office people in the league. Ujiri has a great relationship with all his players and it’s genuine. Zach Lowe of ESPN did a piece on the Raptors and their franchise player DeMar DeRozan revealed that Ujiri told him during a meeting in December that he could go down as the Kobe Bryant of the franchise. The Compton native grew up idolizing Kobe and models a lot of his game after him, so it had to excite him when he heard that. The 28-year-old is averaging 23.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game this season and has the Raptors looking like a serious contender to make the NBA Finals for the first time ever.

Ujiri told DeRozan he could be Toronto’s Kobe — a lifetime player who defines a franchise and, maybe, brings it championship glory.

“When everyone has that kind of confidence in you — that you can carry a franchise — it gives you that extra confidence,” DeRozan says. “For them to say I could be in [Kobe’s] position — it was an honor accepting that fully.”
