Mike Krzyzewski to Step Down as Team USA Coach Following 2016 Olympics

Coach K will be stepping down as the head coach of Team USA following the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Krzyzewski was named the head coach of the program ten years ago and was given the task of rebuilding the USA brand after a disappointing showing in the 2004 Olympics and 2006 World Championships.

He led the United States “redeem team” to the Gold Medal in 2008 in Beijing and again in 2012 in London, as well as the World Championships in 2010 and 2014. Since joining the program, Coach K has a record of 75-1.

Next summer will be his last as the head coach of Team USA and he hopes to bring home a third straight gold medal. Via ESPN:

“It is. It definitely is,” Krzyzewski told ESPN about this being his last stint as head coach with USA Basketball. “I think it’s time to move ahead. During the next season there will be a number of decisions made about the future of USA Basketball with Rio [the roster] and coaching.

“There has to be a succession … a planned succession with really good people so we can keep the continuity of the program going.”
